A Voyage Back In Time.....

Happy Thursday afternoon everyone.  We were up and about early today since it was announced here at HBSP the water would be cut off about 9 a.m. this morning for three or so hours to fix a water leak.

Our plans for today were to travel back to Brookgreen Gardens to take a boat tour of a few of the former rice fields, and to learn a little of the history of the area.

It seems long before Brookgreen Gardens came to be owned by the Huntingtons, it was first virgin bald cypress swamps.

Prior to the Revolutionary War, major land grants were given, the area settled, slaves imported, virgin cypress swamps drained, cleared, a system of dikes built, water trunks (gates) installed, and finally rice was grown.  Whew, I need to sit down and rest from just typing all of this activity.

This morning we learned that prior to the Civil War, rice was the king crop  here in the low-country of South Carolina.  This was a labor intensive industry, with slaves being the primary source of the labor.  The rice fields ranged from 40 - 70 acres in size and took anywhere from 5 - 15 years to clear and build before the first rice seed was planted.

Needless to say, this area is rich in history.  It went from being swamps, to the richest area of the United States prior to the Civil War, to one of the poorest areas in the decades following the Civil War.

Rob took lots of pictures of course and here are a few......

Sadly, this is our last day here at HBSP.  It's been a great week to be at the coast.  In the morning we load up and head back home.

Until next time, stay safe out there.....-R,T,&J.

I Used To Love My Garden....

But now my love is dead.....

I found a Bachelor's Button,

In Black-Eyed Susan's bed.

This morning we began our exploration of Brookgreen Gardens.  I say began, because after about two hours we were simply overwhelmed with all the beauty at hand.  We have plans to go back tomorrow to see some more, and maybe even Thursday.  The tickets are good for seven consecutive days.

Words cannot describe Brookgreen Gardens, and pictures are barely able.....

Thanks for checking by for another great day at the beach.  After we left Brookgreen Gardens, we made a couple of stops then back to the campground for a lunch of fresh boiled shrimp.  But that's a story for another day.

Until next time, stay safe out there.....-R,T,&J.

Hello From Huntington Beach, SC.....

Hello everyone.  We're enjoying Spring Break at beautiful sunny Huntington Beach State Park in Murrell's Inlet, SC.

We drove down yesterday just in time to catch the very last of the rain showers that had been a rain storm a day earlier.  So after sitting up camp in a light misty drizzle, we settled in for the evening.

Today was another story all together.  It's a bright, sunny, cloudless day with a breeze and just the right temperature.  A wonderful day to be at the beach.

Our day has been filled with some t-shirt shopping, visiting with friends, a late lunch at the Inlet Crab House, and just relaxing in general.

Here are just a couple pictures (haven't taken very many yet).....

Thanks for checking by today.

Until next time, stay safe out there.....-R,T,&J.

Hey! What's Going On Back There????

Happy Monday everyone, it's Pod here today taking over the blogging duties from Rob, and have I got a story to tell you!!

It all started a couple of weeks ago.  I saw Rob and he had a tape measure.  Now that usually means he is up to something.  I wasn't sure because he was measuring the area around my butt.  Yes, I said my butt.  You know my rear-end, behind, or derriere!

Well today I found out what was going on.  Seems my spare tire cover I got new last year just didn't hold up very good.  If fact, it looked right grungy.

This idea all started from a picture Cousin Sharon sent Rob of me all set up at one of my favorite campsites.  She had snitched this picture from a blog post from way back in June 2013.  So of course, Rob hunts down his copy of his picture and well this is what happened.....

That's right, my very own, one of a kind, custom made tire cover.  It even had MY picture on it!!  Woohoo!!  I'm so excited.

Oh no, I see Rob walking up from the shop.  I need to scoot.  I hope everyone has a great week.  Be talking again soon.

Until next time, stay safe out there.....-Pod.

Sesquicentennial State Park Wrap-Up......

Happy Sunday afternoon everyone.  We sure hope everybody had a great weekend!  Rob says he's sorry about not blogging yesterday evening, but between visiting, cooking-out, eating, visiting, napping, walking, more visiting, and campfire-ing (hehe, a new word) he just didn't have time!

Needless to say, we had a grand time Saturday at SSP.  We were up early this morning, loaded up and on the road shortly after 8:30 am, arriving home a little after 11:00 am.  Not a bad trip at all.  It was great to visit with everyone and talk about everything under the Sun.

Here are a couple of camping collages from the weekend.  Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for checking by today.  Two weeks from today we're leaving for Spring Break at Huntington Beach State Park in Murrell's Inlet, SC.

Until next time, stay safe out there.....-R,T& a very tired J!

Finally....We Be Camping, 2014 edition....

Happy Friday everyone!!  Well we finally kicked off the 2014 camping season today.

But before we go any farther, click over to Cousin Sharon's Postcards Blog to read about her past few days.  She tripped on a crack in the sidewalk of life, but with all of our thoughts and prayers she's going to be just fine!

Rob, Jackson, and Pod left this morning for Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia, SC for a weekend of camping.  Trisha drove down after work today.  There are several T@B friends, a Roadtrek, and of course R&T's-Pod!!

Tomorrow Cousins Sharon and Becky along with 2/3rds of the Schnauzer Herd will drive down for a cook-out and visit.

Rob did manage to take two pictures today.

After setting up camp and visiting a bit, Rob and Jackson went on a long walk then came back to camp for a nice nap.  After which they helped on of the T@BBers's back her camper into her campsite.

After Trisha rolled in, we made a quick trip to the grocery store for a few supplies, then it was Chef Salads for supper and baths for all of us.  It's on the dusty side here, plus the pines are in full pollen.

Thanks for dropping by today.  Be sure to come back tomorrow, Rob should actually take some pictures.

Until next time, stay safe out there.....-R,T,&J.
